We All Are Creative Because We Are Created in God's Image by Kelley Barton

Theologian and Philosopher Francis Schaeffer wrote two essays that, in 1973, were published in a book called “Art and the Bible”. He lays out why the fine arts should be part of the life of a Believer. One of the many bible verses he points to describes how Moses was given guidance by God to build the Temple with art. Here is one example where God is describing a 3 dimensional sculpture:

“Mold the cherubim (angels) on each end of the atonement cover, making it all of one piece of gold. The cherubim will face each other and look down on the atonement cover. With their wings spread above it, they will protect it.”

Exodus 25:19-20 NLT

“Art and the Bible”, and other writings, shaped my view that Art should be an important part of my spiritual life. Since God is creative, and we are created in God’s image, we are all creative. Not all of us practice the visual or performing arts, but we all can problem solve. We all can envision the future. Those are also creative practices.

The CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS tonight, at Wrigley Coffee, is a way for City Church to provide a space where everyone can be emersed in the performing and visual arts. A space to nurture that creative part inside that doesn’t always get the opportunity to light up, so to speak.

We also wanted to provide a space for performing and visual artists to share their creativity with others.

We believe that experiencing the creative arts can spark an emotional spot inside us that other activities may not touch. That it can deepen our connection with others, with Jesus.

he performances tonight are a mix of beauty, comedy and drama. There is a variety of visual arts created by City Church attenders and members of the community.

My hope is that people will connect not only with the Art, but also with each other and with Jesus in a unique way. And that a hard to reach emotional spot might get touched.
