Blessed to be a Blessing

I will bless you… and you will be a blessing. - Genesis 12:2

In God’s economy, there’s always enough to go around. That’s because God starts the giving and it’s like a set of dominoes that start falling. God blesses us so much that it overflows like an overfull cup of water. Jesus puts it very simply, “Freely have you received; freely give” (Matthew 10:8).

The great Christian mystic, Henri Nouwen, puts it this way:

“I must tell you that claiming your own blessedness always leads to a deep desire to bless others. . . It is remarkable how easy it is to bless others, to speak good things to and about them, to call forth their beauty and truth, when you yourself are in touch with your own blessedness. The blessed one always blesses.” - Henri Nouwen, Life of the Beloved

So many times the hardest part in getting the chain reaction started is letting ourselves receive from God in the first place. Our doubts, our trauma, our guilt, and our busyness are all obstacles from sitting in the loving presence of God and letting the love in. How might you let it in more today?
