In the message yesterday there were some great images about this passage: sitting alone inside a mighty redwood tree, being silent amidst a swarm of bees, putting your phone in a box, and others. What image comes to mind as you read this passage and consider calming yourself?
My heart is not proud, LORD,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself,
I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.
Israel, put your hope in the LORD
both now and forevermore.
Psalm 131
In the resistance to oppression that seems to grow daily, we need to find time and space for renewal. One of MLK’s mentors wrote this. Take some time to listen and think about his wisdom:
There is a very great virtue in the cultivation of silence, and strength to be found in using it as a door to God. Such a door opens within. When I have quieted down, I must spend some time in self examination in the Presence of God… Silence is a door to God. -Howard Thurman, Meditations of the Heart
