There’s a line that Jesus uses with some regularity when he comes upon those in need. He takes the posture of a learner and asks:

What do you want me to do for you? - Matthew 20:32, Mark 10:36, Luke 18:41

Doesn’t that sound like what a waiter might say when you flag them down to refill your water or what a flight attendant might say when you wave your hand at them? It’s what servants say.

It can feel almost embarrassing sometimes to tell Jesus what we really want him to do for us. Of course, sometimes we’re flippant or demanding - that’s not what we’re talking about here. What we’re talking about is those moments of true vulnerability when you’ve peeled back the layers of the onion and you’ve gotten to the stinking core and you’re finally willing to name what you need, what you want, what ails you.

And Jesus is so thrilled by that! He’s been waiting for that moment all along - for you to really come out from behind yourself, for you to show up.

So take some time to dig down in your soul and see what needs serving there. And ask the Great Servant to do for you what you cannot do for yourself.
