We Need People
“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” - John 15:15
Jesus didn’t take divine privilege to circumvent the human condition of needing other people. When he’s thirsty by the side of the road he asks for a drink. When he’s lonely in the Garden of Gethsemane he asks his friends to be with him. He is an embodiment of Genesis 2:18, “It is not good for the human to be alone.”
If Jesus needed people, doesn’t that give us permission to need others too? And yet so few of us are willing to ask for help, willing to admit our need. It’s so vulnerable. And people do indeed disappoint us sometimes.
And yet that doesn’t change the core truth that we need people.
Below is the song we closed the service with on Sunday. Listen in and ask the Spirit to guide your thoughts as it flows over you.
We Need People by Kristian Stanfill - listen to it HERE.
Here’s to the ones that you can laugh with
The same ones you ugly cry with
Here’s to the ones you sometimes fight with
But you’ll always fight for
Here’s to the ones that know your secrets
But they don’t see you any different
Here’s to the ones that just sit and listen
And don’t try to fix it
The highs are a little bit higher
The lows make a little more sense
When you got someone in your corner
That you know you can live it with
Life is complicated and our pride says
We can make it on our own
But the truth is simple, we need people
Here’s to the roots that sorrow deepens
And the bloom that joy has opened
Here’s to the years of steady walking
And the miles that are coming
The highs are a little bit higher
The lows make a little more sense
When you got someone in your corner
That you know you can live it with
Life is complicated and our pride says
We can make it on our own
But the truth is simple, we need people
BRIDGE
It’s not always easy
It’s gonna get messy
It’s hard but I’m learning
It’s necessary
If you want to grow then
You can’t go it alone, friend
You got to open the door and
Let someone in
You gotta let someone in
The highs are a little bit higher
The lows make a little more sense
When you got someone in your corner
That you know you can live it with
Life is complicated and our pride says
We can make it on our own
But the truth is simple, we need people
