Trouble - Billy Mishall
“I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
I hesitate to use scripture as a jumping off point for Reflections. People quote the Bible out of context all the time in order to shut down hard conversations. So I will try to use this verse as a starting point, rather than a way to avoid challenging thoughts or emotions.
Trouble. It’s everywhere these days. Incomprehensible and overwhelming. I am troubled when I meet the fearful eyes of someone who mistakes me for law enforcement. I am troubled when 13 year olds in youth group anticipate their school being raided. I’m troubled that churches must have a plan in place just in case federal agents should arrive on any given Sunday. And I am profoundly troubled when I see fear manifesting in the faces of those I love, changing their demeanor and clouding their outlook on life.
So what do I do with Jesus’ words? According to the verse above, if I really believe that he has overcome the world, then I should be of good cheer. But I’m not.
I try to remain hopeful. I try to keep my heart open. I try to keep the love flowing through prayer and meditation. I try to uplift those around me. I mean, this particular reflection may not be too uplifting! But it’s where I am. I try to be present. I try to remember that Jesus overcame all of this and more, so that I may have peace—so that we all may have peace. And at the same time— we will always have trouble.
