Scripture Fulfilled
“Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” - Luke 4:21
For those who missed the service yesterday, our friends Erica and Lisa did a remarkable job sharing their friendship with us all. As Brenna led them through some verses in Proverbs 27, they wove stories of what it has meant for them to have a friend, a true friend, through the journeys of their lives. We got to listen to the scriptures fulfilled in our hearing - what a gift.
We don’t all get to have a friend who lives across the street (yes, when Lisa and her family came back from their stint in Brazil, they found a place across the street from Erica). But friendship is still open to all of us.
For them, it started with vulnerability. In a church group (that was perhaps overly structured and not the sort of thing they might join now), they took a deep dive into vulnerability. They shared their struggles, their fears, their hearts. And that set them up to go deeper.
But all friendship doesn’t start (or continue) that way. Brenna shared a key ‘micro-practice’ of sending a text message once a day to someone she likes. For her it’s part of her practice of facing the loneliness of these times.
But both of those things - the deep vulnerability and the simple reaching out - demonstrate both courage and initiative.
So how about you today - are you willing to ask Jesus for the courage and initiative to make a friend / be a friend?
