Privilege or Blessing?

From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. Luke 12:48

Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish what is a blessing from God and what is a privilege, an advantage given to you by your culture often as a result of a system that favors certain people over others. (If you’re trying to figure out what privilege is and how it relates to following Christ and things like justice, this may be a helpful article).

While there can be constructive conversations about these things, sometimes we get lost in the discussion and never actually do anything about it.

One of the practical things you can do when you are considering questions around what is from God and what is from society is to read over the words of Jesus above. Regardless of what you have or where it comes from, you can look at it as something that can be shared with others. What would it look like for you to use what you have in abundance to share with others, to serve others, to lift others up, to connect with others who are different than you, and to do justice in our world?

To Jesus, these are very live questions, and he often spoke about them. Talk with him about what this is stirring up for you today.
