On the Seventh Day God Made the Platypus

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. - Genesis 2:1-3

Brenna Rubio asked the question in the message yesterday, “How does God rest?” She talked about the different ways we rest - not just kicking up our feet or taking a nap, but by being creative and sometimes even by exercising. She then made this theological leap: “Maybe after such an ordered week or creating, God’s rest day was for the fun stuff. In fact, maybe God made the platypus on the seventh day!”

I (Bill) don’t think there was anyone in the room who’d ever considered this profound theological insight! But think about it - it makes total sense. We do all sorts of creative things to be renewed, so maybe that’s what God did too! It’s not like God took a nap, after all.

So if God could create a platypus on the 7th day, what could you do that is truly, deeply restful? Don’t think about what you should or should not do - there’s no shoulds here. Think about what would bring delight. It could be anything from memorizing a verse of scripture to baking double-chocolate zucchini bread, from watching the sunrise in silence to having friends for dinner.

Now, what if you planned that restful activity/inactivity to do sometime soon?
